Recently retired St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter stopped at Funderburk’s Gas and Diner in Pocahontas with a flat tire Wednesday. Darlene Bone, a cook at Funderburk’s, was the first to recognize him.
“I could see the side view of him because he had like a little toboggan hat on, and said, yeah, that’s him. Of course we had our phones out and offered to call Schuster’s Repair to get his tire repaired,” Darlene said. “People started recognizing him and a lot of young kids came in and got their pictures with him…very friendly, very super nice.”
Darlene said Carpenter had never before been to Pocahontas, so she gave him a little history of the town during their visit.
