The Greenville City Council will hold a special meeting Thursday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. to allow public comment either in support of the current ordinance allowing leaf burning during specified times or to express support of a total ban of leaf burning. Mayor Alan Gaffner told us the issue was brought up in 2007, again in 2010, and recently in 2013.
“Late in the fall of 2013, the Greenville City Council received a petition,” said Gaffner. “The petition contained approximately 200 names who were requesting that the City Council totally ban the burning of leaves within the city limits. As the fall season was approaching, leaves were falling, and the disposal of those leaves was underway, the council believed that any change at that time would not provide an opportunity for residents of the community to make plans and handle their leaves in other ways. The council, through their consensus, made a decision to hold a special council meeting for the purpose of hearing from the community.”
The mayor said anyone who is interested in this topic is welcome to attend and voice their opinion. Under the current program, leaf burning is permitted on private property on Mondays, Thursdays, and the first and third weekends of the month from November 1 through December 31 and from March 15 through April 15.
