Illinois Has Fewer But Larger Farms

A new federal report says there are fewer farms in Illinois, even though the number of acres being cultivated has risen.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s five-year farming census shows that Illinois has lost nearly 1,800 farms, down to just more than 75,000. On the other hand, farm acreage in Illinois rose by 162,000 acres to nearly 27 million acres. The average size of an Illinois farm rose in the last five years by eleven acres to 359 acres.
