Members of the 2013 Relay for Life of Bond County steering committee and team captains have released a statement expressing their desire to pursue new opportunities to raise funds that will benefit Bond County cancer patients and their families. The statement is the result of a recent meeting where the group discussed its goals for 2014 and beyond.
The statement reads, in part:
“While the ACS [American Cancer Society] is a worthwhile cause, and the research they do has great promise, the Bond County Relay steering committee and some of the team captains and participants have decided this is our time to pursue new avenues to support cancer patients in Bond County. We have agreed that while we’re proud of our efforts on behalf of ACS…it’s time for us to step away from Relay. Our hearts are with exploring new ways to generate funds that can stay locally and help our friends and neighbors in tangible ways. We are in agreement that wherever this road takes us, we will still set aside a portion of the funds we raise for ACS and cancer research.”
The statement says the members involved in the endeavor have opened discussions with local agencies to see how they might work either for them or with them and stressed that such discussions are in the early stages.
