May 18-24 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery is working with the US Postal Service, community organizations, insurance companies, and veterinarians to educate you about dog bites.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs annually, more than half of whom are children.
Remember, even the friendliest dog may bite when startled or surprised. Here are some tips to help avoid dog bites: Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog, even if it is a family pet, ask permission before touching or playing with a dog, and remember any dog can be dangerous and any dog can bite.
