The driver who pled guilty in April to striking and killing a highway worker from Bond County while under the influence of Ambien has received his sentence.
According to WSIL-TV in Carterville, 36-year-old Michael Jeter of West Frankfort will serve nine years in the Department of Corrections. The charges stem from an accident in May 2012 when Jeter hit four highway workers on I-64. The crash claimed the life of 38-year-old Dennis Beard of Bond County, a husband and father of three.
Jeter said he had worked a four-to-midnight shift at a coal mine and took the Ambien when he got home. He was on his way to a doctor’s appointment in St. Louis the next day when the accident occurred.
