Suspect Dead, Officer Wounded In Pana Standoff

There’s still no word on what prompted a standoff near Pana, but the incident left one man dead and a Pana Police officer shot.

A Pana Police officer assigned to the Central Illinois Enforcement Group reportedly visited a residence about seven miles west of Pana around 2:30 Tuesday morning, with members of the drug task force. Police say Josh A. Edwards age 25 of Pana was inside the house and opened fire, hitting the Pana officer, who was taken to a Springfield area hospital.

Police alleged Edwards fired on officers then ran to the roof of the home and refused to come down. The Illinois State Police SWAT team was called in to negotiate with him. Officials say Edwards set the roof on fire then started shooting at officers on the ground. Members of the SWAT team fired back, killing the Edwards.

The Pana officer who was hit is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation continues and police are reportedly questioning three other people who were in the home.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved, including the Illinois State Police, Christian County Sheriff’s Office, Pana Police Department, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and Taylorville Police Department.
