Fatal Accident In Rural Highland

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle traffic crash on Michael Road, near Iberg Road, in rural Highland on Friday, August 29 at 7:33 p.m. Highland Fire and Rescue and Highland EMS also responded to the scene.

Deputies found a 1994 Chevrolet Corvette off the north side of the roadway in a field. Evidence indicated the vehicle was traveling westbound on Michael Road when it left the roadway and rolled over at least once before coming to a stop.

The vehicle was occupied by two juvenile females. Both occupants were transported from the scene to area hospitals. The driver was in serious condition at the scene and was airlifted by ARCH to a St. Louis area hospital. The passenger was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The 16 year old female driver subsequently died from injuries sustained during the crash.

The accident is still under investigation, but a preliminary evaluation of the evidence reportedly indicates excessive speed was a contributing factor.
