An inmate who escaped from the state prison in Vandalia Tuesday is still on the run.
IDOC officials say 21 year old Marcus Battice escaped from the Vandalia Correctional Center around 2:00 Tuesday afternoon. He was wearing his blue prison shirt when he took off near the back gate area. Battice was incarcerated for possession of a stolen vehicle and is considered a non-violent offender by officials.
He’s a light-skinned black male about 5’ 7”, 167 pounds.
Officials say the search has been extensive, with four canine units and multiple state and local agencies involved, including an ATV from the Greenville Fire Protection District and a portable light tower that is housed at the Mulberry Grove Fire Protection District. At least 12 different agencies are involved in the search, including boats patrolling the Kaskaskia River.
Battice was going to be eligible for parole in January 2015, according to prison officials. Information from the IDOC shows that Battice did not take any extra clothing or food and water with him for the escape. Which could mean the escape was not planned. Before this incident prison officials considered Battice a low-escapee risk.
An IDOC spokesman said that while Battice was not incarcerated for a violent offense, the public should exercise extreme caution with any escapee and, if sighted, contact law enforcement immediately. Do not attempt to make contact with the escapee.
