CSX Railroad is currently working on a project in Smithboro.
WGEL spoke with CSX Spokeswoman Melanie Cost, who told us more about the project.
“CSX is constructing a new connection with BNSF Railroad at Smithboro,” she told us. “Right now the tracks cross over each other, but there’s no opportunity to transfer freight from one railroad to the other. By installing the connection, CSX will improve the efficiency of transportation throughout the Midwest and, really, better serve customers throughout the country.
“We’re very appreciative of working with the local officials and the state commission. We’re really looking forward to getting this done and limiting any impact on the community.”
Cost said CSX expects the construction to be completed late this year or early in 2015.
