
A great number of activities will be held this weekend throughout the WGEL listening area. Here’s what we have on our Community Calendar:
Friday, October 3
The Comets Sports Boosters annual Homecoming BBQ is Friday, October 3 on the Greenville Square. Pork chops, pork burgers, brats, and hot dogs will be served from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
The Spools of Fun Quilt Club in Vandalia is sponsoring a Quilt Show Friday and Saturday, October 3 & 4. Hours Friday are 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The show is at 425 West Gallatin Street and the admission charge is $3.00, with children under ten years old admitted free.
The 45th Annual Vandalia Grand Levee will be held Friday and Saturday, October 3 and 4 in conjunction with the Vandalia Harvest Festival. Activities, including live music, demonstrations, vendors, stagecoach rides, and more, take place on the grounds of the historic statehouse in Vandalia. Friday’s events run 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Saturday activities will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 4
“Hook’n in the Park” Plow Day is Saturday, October 4, at the BCDC Park in Beckemeyer. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. with plowing starting at 12:30 p.m. The entry fee is $25.00. There will be food & drinks, live music, and vendors. For more information, call Keith at 363-8187.
Bradford National Bank is sponsoring a free shredding and recycling day Saturday, October 4, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Bradford Community Building. Newspapers and magazines will not be accepted. The service is limited to paper products with account or personal information. For more information, call Randy at 664-2200.
The Greenville Business & Professional Association 23rd Annual Apple Day is Saturday, October 4 on the Greenville Square. The Farmer’s Market opens at 7:00 a.m. Activities throughout the day include bake sales, games, a petting zoo, apple dessert contest, and chili cook-off. There will be musical entertainment from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The annual Apple Dessert Contest begins at 10:00 a.m. Desserts will be judged on presentation, flavor, and creativity. The recipe must accompany the entry. Bring your entry to the north side of the courthouse square. First, second, and third place awards will be chosen. Pieces of contest entries will be available for purchase. A chili cook-off is part of Apple Day activities this year. Apple Day is Saturday, October 4 and the chili cook-off starts at 11:00 a.m. near the gazebo. The entry fee is $10.00 and you must be at least 18 years old to enter. Entries must be in a slow cooker and ready for judging at 11:00.
The Greenville Airport Open House and Airstravaganza are Saturday, October 4, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the airport south of Greenville on Rt. 127. The Texas Twisters T-34 formation and aerobatic team will perform. The team will fly a series of formation flights as a salute to veterans. There is no charge to attend and everyone is welcome. You may take a ride in a Cessna airplane, helicopter, or a 1941 bi-wing plane. Pilots will be on hand to answer questions about aviation. For more information, call Craig at 322-3532.
Special Olympics Illinois athletes will compete Saturday, October 4, in the District F Bocce Competition, at Glik Park in Highland. Teams from Special Olympics Areas 9, 11, 12, and 17 will compete and opening ceremonies begin at 8:45 a.m. There is no charge to attend and everyone is invited. The St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Albers is hosting a Fall Festival Saturday, October 4, at Lehrter Park. Activities include a car/tractor/Jeep/4×4 show, children’s crafts, country store, bags tournament, Par 3 golf game, silent auction, rides, and games. Food will be available starting at 9:00 a.m. with a sausage dinner at 11:00. There will be live music from 8:00 p.m. – midnight. For more information, call 248-5112.
There is an open house at the Keyesport Fire Protection District Fire House Saturday, October 4, in celebration of 50 years of dedicated service. The event is from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and there will be food, inflatables, and demonstrations.
The Highland Animal Shelter 4th Annual Dinner Auction is Saturday, October 4, at the Highland Country Club. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:30. The cost is $45.00 for singles and $75.00 for couples. There will be silent and live auctions. For more information, call Marilyn at 644-2327.
Sunday, October 5
The Highland-Pierron Fire Department’s Third Annual Pancake & Sausage Breakfast is Sunday, October 5. Serving is from 8:00 a.m. – noon. There will be a burn demonstration at 11:00, information on fire prevention, fire extinguisher training, and tours of the department. The cost is $5.00 per plate and children under age 5 may eat free.
The Ripson Bridge Fall Festival is Sunday, October 5, from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The festival is at the historic Ripson Bridge south of Sorento and north of Old Ripley. There will be country music all day, children’s games, pumpkins, lye soap, lots of crafts stands, and great food. Bring your family and your lawn chairs and stay all day.
