Illinois State Police responded Tuesday, December 30, at 11:18 a.m., to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 at the 46 mile marker south of Litchfield. According to information from the State Police, Wilma Polly, age 78, of Springfield, Missouri, was northbound on Interstate 55 at mile post 46 when she lost control of her Nissan. The car traveled into the median and struck a concrete culvert, became airborne and struck the rear axle of a southbound Freightliner truck causing the truck to overturn onto the Nissan.
Both vehicles came to rest blocking the southbound lanes. The truck driver was not injured. Polly was injured and airlifted from the scene. The southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were closed for about two hours and traffic was diverted at Litchfield. Polly was cited for alleged improper lane usage and failure to wear a seatbelt.
