Donna Douglas, the actress known for playing Elly May Clampett on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show passed away this week at the age of 81. Douglas visited Greenville in 2013 as the celebrity guest at the annual Greenville Graffiti Car Show.
Sherry Schaefer, of Greenville, a big fan of Douglas’s work, was invited to serve as Douglas’s personal escort during her time in Greenville.
“She was not acting when she played that role; that was a genuine tom-girl, farm girl playing that part,” Schaefer told WGEL. “She was down to earth and full of life; a real go-getter and very enthusiastic.
“She loved food. She constantly talked about food. Joe’s Pizza was a big hit with her in Greenville. In the last year, we joked about how I should grab a pizza and jump in the plane to deliver it to her down in Louisiana.
“Unlike a lot of stars, she wanted to spend time with everybody, talk to them, and sign autographs. She was just such a vibrant, full-of-life person.”
Douglas passed away Thursday in Louisiana.
