Edward L. McMillan, a Greenville businessman recognized as a national leader in agribusiness, was elected Chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees during its annual organizational meeting Thursday.
A University of Illinois alum and trustee since 2009, McMillan will head a 12-member board that governs the U of I and its campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield, with over 78,000 students, more than 23,000 faculty and staff, and a $5.6 billion annual budget.
McMillan said he is honored to serve the University that launched a more than 40-year career in agribusiness, including nearly a decade as president and chief executive officer of Purina Mills Inc., the nation’s largest manufacturer of animal nutrition products.
McMillan was president and CEO of Purina Mills from 1988 to 1996. He currently works as an independent business consultant specializing in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and the creation of business alliances in the food and agribusiness industries. He earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural science from the U of I Urbana-Champaign campus and is a recipient of the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award and the College of Agriculture’s Award of Merit. He serves on the board of directors for several agribusiness and food-related companies and also serves on the Board of Trustees of Greenville College.
