Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a train derailment in western Fayette County Thursday night. Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith told WGEL they were notified of the derailment around 10:30 Thursday night when a passerby noticed two cars off the track. One of the two cars had lost a set of wheels, which caused the accident.
The cars were empty box cars. No hazardous material was being transported and no dangerous spills occurred. Hazmat crews were not required on scene.
Sheriff Smith said some damage was sustained to railroad ties at the point of the derailment, however trains were still able to slowly get through on other tracks.
