Oil Spill At Coffeen Lake

Coffeen Lake is closed to boating while cleanup of a turbine oil leak at the Coffeen Power Station continues.

Dynegy Inc. reported the spill Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Dynegy spokesman Micah Hirschfield told WGEL preliminary analysis indicates less than 700 gallons of oil were spilled into the lake. The cause appears to be a leaking cooler, which has been taken out of service.

Both Hirschfield and Chris Young with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources told us no direct impact on fish or wildlife has been observed. However, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has recommended the lake be closed until further notice to expedite cleanup activities. Hirschfield said Dynegy will continue to assess and monitor the situation.
