Two Fatal Train Collisions Over The Weekend


A Vandalia man was killed when struck by a train on Sunday. According to Fayette County Coroner’s office 71 year old David Waltz of Vandalia was struck by a west bound freight train near the 8th street crossing in Vandalia. According to the report Waltz stood in the tracks and was struck by the train. Waltz was pronounced dead at the scene just after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Vandalia Police told WGEL the incident is being investigated as an apparent suicide by the Vandalia Police, Fayette County Coroner, and Rail Road Police.

Federal officials are investigating a weekend crash that involved a train and a truck at a rail crossing in Alton. Officials say one person in the truck, 80 year old Henry D. Bloodworth, of Alton, was killed. The collision occurred at the Washington Avenue railroad crossing north of Homer Adams Parkway in Alton. An Amtrak spokesperson told the St. Louis Post Dispatch that none of the train crew or 256 passengers aboard the train were hurt.
