Edwardsville Police Officer Shot While Serving Search Warrant

An Edwardsville Police Officer was shot early Wednesday morning while attempting to serve a search warrant at a home on South Fillmore Street in Edwardsville.

According to information from the Illinois State Police, an Edwardsville Police Officer, a Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy, and several officers from other agencies were at the home to serve a search warrant for a computer. The resident, who is in his 40’s, answered the door, shook officer’s hands, and then allegedly displayed a handgun. There was a violent struggle over the handgun and at least one shot was fired from the Edwardsville Officer’s weapon. It has not yet been confirmed if the suspect’s gun was fired. The Edwardsville Officer was struck in the hand and the suspect was struck in the arm, shoulder, and jaw.

Both were taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a St. Louis hospital. They were treated for non life-threatening injuries and released.

A handgun, that was not a police officer’s weapon, was retrieved from the residence. No names have been released and the investigation continues.
