Highland-Pierron Firefighters Respond To Barn Fire

Highland-Pierron Firefighters responded Sunday, at 6:22 p.m., to a report of a barn fire on Frey Acres Drive northeast of Highland. According to Fire Chief Steve Plocher, the barn was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The big old barn had been remodeled several times and converted into a shop. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a hot lawn mower parked in the barn Sunday evening. The barn was totally destroyed and damage to the barn and contents is estimated at approximately $200,000.00. Two firefighters received minor injuries and Highland EMS treated them at the scene. Firefighters from the Pocahontas-Old Ripley, Grantfork, Marine, and St. Rose Fire Departments responded to provide mutual aid with tankers and manpower. Firefighters were on the scene about three hours Sunday night and were called at 4:30 Monday morning for a reported rekindle for about half an hour.
