An explosion occurred in a manhole at the intersection of Ida and Center streets in Sorento Thursday night. WGEL learned it occurred at a sewer lift station, blowing off the manhole cover and doing some damage to the road.
Shoal Creek Fire Protection District firefighters were called at 7:39 p.m.
Allan Davis, county emergency service director, reported he was contacted by the state emergency agency about the incident. He said it could not be determined if there was gasoline in the manhole or gas fumes, however, when the lift station pumps kicked on, the explosion occurred.
Davis said it was determined there was no environmental problem at the scene, so no remediation efforts were necessary. No one was injured.
