Two Vehicle Crash Shuts Down I-55

Illinois State Police are reporting a two-vehicle crash that occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 near the 50 mile marker. The accident occurred Wednesday at 9:26 a.m.

Both vehicles were traveling north when a Nissan, driven by 38 year old Matthew J. Chard, of Brooklyn, Wisconsin, struck the rear of a Freightliner truck, driven by 42 year old Curtis J. Simmons, of Litchfield.

Matthew Chard, driver of the Nissan was transported to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield with non-life threatening injuries. Both northbound lanes of I-55 were closed for approximately a half-hour to facilitate the landing of the helicopter, remove the Nissan, and clear debris from the roadway.

Chard was cited for alleged failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
