Fayette County Sheriff’s Department To Utilize Drone

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has purchased a drone to use for various law enforcement activities.

Sheriff Chris Smith told WGEL what led to the drone being obtained:

Money for the drone, which cost $1,900, came from Drug Forfeiture funds.

The sheriff said the drone will be available to other emergency service departments in Fayette County:

The drone has a camera which provides video that can be seen when in use or can be reviewed later on an I-pad.

The sheriff said state law prohibits the use of the drone for initial investigations, but a search warrant can be sought from the court in some cases where information about a crime has been obtained.
