Granite City Teen Dies At Football Practice

Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn says his autopsy has been conducted as the investigation continues into the death of a Granite City teenager who died after collapsing at a high school football practice late Wednesday afternoon.

13 year old Toney M. Graham was pronounced dead Wednesday at 6:09 p.m. in the emergency room at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.

His football practice had started at 4:00 p.m. with fittings for uniforms and proceeded to pre-practice stretching. Graham collapsed suddenly onto the floor. Coaching staff cared for Graham while awaiting the arrival of the Granite City Fire Department EMS. Graham reportedly had not complained of any illness and was laughing and joking with his teammates before his collapse. He had no history of medical problems.

The autopsy did not indicate any trauma or foul play. It did yield evidence of cardiac disease, however no cause of death will be prescribed pending further examination.
