The Illinois State Police arrested 52 year old Gregory K. Nelson of East St. Louis Saturday at approximately 5:45 p.m. Nelson was taken into custody without incident by the U.S Marshals Service and the Illinois State Police at an apartment in St. Ann, MO.
Nelson is being charged with alleged Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon.
Last Tuesday, June 23, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a state trooper conducted a traffic stop on the northbound entrance ramp to I-255 from State Street in East St. Louis. The officer, a nine year veteran, suspected that the driver, Nelson, was intoxicated and asked Nelson to exit the vehicle for field sobriety testing. At some point, while Nelson was outside of the vehicle, he allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at the trooper who returned fire and Nelson fled the scene on foot. Neither the trooper nor Nelson was injured during the incident.
Nelson is currently being held by authorities in Missouri pending extradition to Illinois.
