Effingham Authorities Investigate Infant Death; Foul Play Not Suspected


The Effingham County Coroner’s office responded to a call from St. Anthony Memorial Hospital’s emergency department Saturday at 1:10 a.m.

A 2-month-old infant was brought to the emergency department from Jasper County and pronounced deceased at 1:08 a.m. No foul play is suspected and the death is being investigated by the Southern Illinois Child Death Task Force, Newton Police Department, Illinois State Police, and the Effingham County Coroner’s office.

The infant was found unresponsive at a hotel in Newton where the family was staying. The infant was transported by Jasper County EMS to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital.

An autopsy was performed Sunday in Bloomington and results are pending. Names are being witheld until all family can be notified.
