Effingham County Coroner Rules Infant Death Accidental Asphyxiation

Effingham Coroner Duane Guffey has released additional information on a recent infant death in Effingham County.

Emilia Pierce, 2 months old, of Hastings, Nebraska passed away early Saturday morning in the emergency department at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

The baby was brought to the emergency department from Jasper County, where she was found unresponsive at a hotel in Newton where the family was staying.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate accidental asphyxiation was the cause of death.

The case was investigated by the Southern Illinois Child Death Task Force, Illinois State Police, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, the Effingham County Coroner’s office, and the Newton Police Department.
