The Illinois Department of Public Health reminds you of the importance of taking precautions against tick and animal bites.
Ticks can carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, and others. Wild animals can transmit rabies, a virus that affects the nervous system.
To help avoid ticks, when in an area where ticks are found, wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves, long trousers, boots, or sturdy shoes, and a head covering. Apply insect repellant with 10-30 percent DEET and walk in the center of trails where weeds cannot brush against you.
To help avoid rabies, teach children never to handle unfamiliar or wild animals and keep your pet vaccinations up to date.
