When United States Senator Richard Durbin visited southern Illinois earlier this week, he stopped in Greenville to see the industrial park and then went to Highland.
Durbin wanted to talk to Highland officials and see Silver Lake, which has been affected by an oil spill that occurred July 10.
The senator told WGEL the federal government has authority over oil pipelines. Click below to hear more:
It has been reported more than 4,200 gallons of oil ran into Silver creek, which feeds into Silver Lake, when a fitting malfunctioned on a 20-inch pipe at the Plains All-American Pipeline Company Pocahontas pump station.
