Kaskaskia River Drowning Victim Identified As 26 Year Old New Baden Man

The body of a New Baden man last seen diving off a boat into the Kaskaskia River in New Memphis Saturday has been recovered.

Clinton County Coroner Phillip Moss told WGEL the victim was 26 year old Joshua Toennies of New Baden.

An Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman told WGEL Toennies’s body was found Monday morning about a quarter-mile from where he was last seen, about a mile south of the Illinois Rt. 177 bridge. IDNR is investigating the incident.

Toennies’s group of friends said he never resurfaced after he dove into the river from a pontoon boat.

The DNR credited Fayette Fire and Rescue, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and several of Toennies’s friends for assisting with the search. SAR K9 CO-OP, a non-profit organization that provided a helicopter, searched from the air.
