The Greenville plan commission is recommending to the Greenville City Council that the Unified Development Code be amended and a permit be issued to allow Greenville Masonic Lodge 245 to use property at 1111 East College Avenue.
The property, formerly the site of the Assembly of God Calvary Temple Church, is now owned by the Masonic Lodge. It is in a neighborhood urban zoning district, which does not allow clubs or lodges.
Joe Craver, city zoning administrator, recommended that the code be amended to allow clubs and lodges to exist in a neighborhood urban district.
The plan commission approved a motion to recommend to the council that this be done, and also passed a motion recommending that Greenville Lodge 245 be granted a conditional use permit to conduct lodge activities on the College Avenue property.
Greenville City Manager Dave Willey commented that even if the code is amended, individual clubs and lodges, wanting to use property in a neighborhood urban zone, would still have to obtain a permit from the city.
