Eastbound Interstate 64 in Clinton County was completely shut down for several hours Tuesday morning as State Police handled an accident that claimed the life of a Mt. Vernon woman.
Just after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, an eastbound vehicle struck a semi truck parked along the interstate at milepost 35. State police say a second vehicle then struck the first from behind.
The front seat passenger inside of the first vehicle, a 36 year old female from Mt. Vernon, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to a St. Louis area hospital via ARCH helicopter. The driver and passenger inside the second vehicle, a male and female from Arizona, were both transported to a hospital in Washington County. The semi driver, a 37 year old male from Heltonville, Indiana was not injured.
Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash and have not yet released the names of those involved.
