Pedestrian Struck By Train In Vandalia, Investigation Continues


A man from the Vandalia area was struck by a train while on foot this weekend. Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray told WGEL that they were notified by a CSX conductor at 4:08 a.m. Sunday that a train had struck a man under the Third & Kennedy Streets overpass.

Ray identified the pedestrian as 27 year old Carl Sprague. Sprague sustained critical injuries, but was conscious and responsive following the collision, according to Ray.

Vandalia Police, Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies, Fayette County Hospital Ambulance Service personnel, and Vandalia volunteer firefighters responded.

Sprague was taken to Fayette County Hospital and transferred to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. An update on his condition was unavailable.
