New Flag Pole At Helia Healthcare Dedicated In Honor Of Fred Baumberger

A new flag pole at Helia Healthcare was dedicated Wednesday afternoon in honor of life-long Bond county resident and former WGEL farm reporter Fred Baumberger.

The pole was purchased and erected by Greenville American Legion Post 282 using money donated to the post by Baumberger, who was a 50-year member of the group.

Veteran Tony Koonce said the project was the idea of Mac Huey and Ben Collman, both of whom passed away before they could see it become a reality.

Veteran John Knight spoke about Fred Baumberger to the residents of Helia Healthcare, a dozen of them fellow veterans.

Knight said Baumberger was an ordinary man with an extraordinary life. In 1941, Baumberger went to serve his country in World War II. He called Baumberger an illustration of the heart and soul of “The Greatest Generation”, noting that Baumberger was compelled to serve his community and those around him.
