Highland House Fire Claims Two Lives

An early morning house fire in Highland claimed the lives of two people.

Sunday, November 29, at approximately 8:10 a.m., Highland Police got two 911 calls reporting smoke coming from a residence in the 700 block of East Pike Drive in Highland. Highland Police, EMS, and firefighters responded.

According to information from Highland Fire Chief Rick Bloemker, the home was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Firefighters recovered two bodies inside the home and they are identified at Jack and Shirley Cygan, both in their mid-80’s.

Firefighters worked for hours to extinguish the fire and the cause is not known. Bloemker said the state fire marshal is investigating but the cause is not believed to be suspicious.
