A Mulberry Grove man, 28-year-old Demetrice Lockett, has been charged with an early Christmas morning murder in Marion County.
Lockett is being held in the Marion County jail in Salem on $1 million bond.
The shooting occurred at the Party Liquors Outback bar in Centralia. The victim was identified as 26-year-old Leroy Roverson, Jr. of Mt. Vernon.
Centralia Police Chief Doug Krutsinger told WGEL it appeared an argument led to a fight in the bar, and Lockett allegedly went to a car in the parking lot and returned with a gun, firing one shot into a group of people, who were still fighting.
Krutsinger said an autopsy revealed the bullet went into Roverson’s back, in an upward angle, striking several organs including the heart.
The police chief said Lockett allegedly ran on foot from the bar and dropped the gun. An Illinois State trooper saw the defendant running down an alley and was eventually able to apprehend him.
Chief Krutsinger said the gun was recovered with the assistance of the city’s K-9 unit.
The police chief and State’s Attorney Matt Wilzbach reported there is video of the incident, obtained from the business.
Lockett appeared in court Monday on the two-count murder charge. He was appointed an attorney.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 19th.
