Animal Rescue Worker Falls Through Ice On Shoal Creek

Shoal Creek first responders received a report of a person in Shoal Creek near the Sorento Avenue bridge Tuesday afternoon just before 3:00 p.m. An animal rescue worker from Hamel had been paged to the area to rescue a deer that had fallen through the ice on the creek. During recovery efforts, the worker also broke through the ice and fell into the creek.

Assistant Shoal Creek Fire Chief David Caulk told WGEL the unidentified individual was out of the creek by the time fire personnel arrived. Crews brought the man to an ambulance in an effort to warm him up. The man refused ambulance transport.

Greenville firefighters were called for mutual aid, but the call was cancelled en route. Shoal Creek personnel were on the scene for about a half hour.

The initial animal rescue efforts were successful and the deer was pulled safely from the creek.

Caulk reminds area residents not to venture onto any ice covered waterways as the ice is not strong enough to support much weight.
