With reserves low, the American Red Cross is making an appeal for area residents to donate blood in January.
Dan Fox, external communications manager for the American Red Cross, asked everyone who is eligible to make a blood donation during the month of January. The contributions will replenish their depleted blood supply, which dropped by about 50,000 units over November and December.

Fox said the reduction in blood and platelet donors is due to several reasons, including the holidays, which lead to regular donors being too busy; winter weather; and the cold and flu season.
On average, the Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day for patients at hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
