Troy Police Arrest High School Teacher Who Allegedly Used Social Media To Solicit Eighth Grader

Kevin W. Battas

Troy Police arrested a Mt. Vernon high school teacher Wednesday evening for alleged Indecent Solicitation of a Child and Grooming.

25 year old Kevin W. Battas, of Mt. Vernon, is charged with allegedly communicating with an eighth grade student using Whisper, an anonymous social media app. Police report Battas committed Indecent Solicitation of a Child because he allegedly knowingly discussed an act of sexual conduct with a minor and allegedly offered to perform sexual acts upon the minor. The Grooming charge was filed because the alleged solicitation of the child was done using a smart phone or similar device.

Troy Police Chief Brad Parsons said, “Smart phones and social media apps have created new avenues for predators to contact and solicit children. As parents we need to be aware of what our children are doing on their phones and who they are communicating with.”

Police arrested Battas before physical contact was made with the child.

Indecent Solicitation of a Child is a class 3 felony and carries a sentence of two to five years in prison. Grooming is a class 4 felony and carries a sentence of one to three years in prison.
