Alton Man Sentenced In Craigslist Counterfeit Conspiracy Following Investigation Involving Clinton County Authorities

21 year old Tony Young, Jr., of Alton, was sentenced last week in federal court on the charge of Conspiracy to Manufacture, Possess and Pass Counterfeit United States Currency. The district court sentenced Young to 19 months in federal prison.

During his plea last November, Young admitted that he and several others had engaged in an agreement to manufacture counterfeit money and use the fake currency to buy vehicles. Once in possession of those vehicles, they would resell them for genuine United States currency.

In August of 2013, the group purchased a vehicle listed on Craigslist by a person in Sandoval. The group paid in counterfeit $100 bills. The group was arrested a short time after the fraudulent purchase by law enforcement in Carlyle, Clinton County, and Sandoval.

The investigation was conducted by the Carlyle and Sandoval Police Departments, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Secret Service.
