Smithboro Firefighters responded Monday, at 6:14 p.m., to a report of a field fire on Newport Road north of Smithboro. According to Fire Chief Dale Deverick, the property was along the north end of Governor Bond Lake and belonged to the City of Greenville.
The wind was pushing the fire toward a residence so Greenville and Mulberry Grove Firefighters were called for mutual aid with manpower and brush trucks. The soft ground caused firefighters to carry water to the fire and they used leaf blowers to create a fire break.
About four acres were burned but there was no damage or injuries and firefighters were on the scene about an hour and a half.
Deverick said the cause of the fire is suspicious and the Bond County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
