Jason Hearty, age 30, of rural Altamont was struck and killed by a semi-truck Monday morning, east of St. Elmo.
The driver of the truck, Kevin Bagwill, age 31, of Godfrey, has been ticketed by state police for alleged failure to report an accident to police and alleged leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death.
Fayette County State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison told WGEL he must review police reports about the incident before deciding whether or not to file criminal charges.
Hearty left his home at 5 a.m. Monday to bicycle to work in St. Elmo when the crash occurred about 5:55 a.m. on Route 40 about a mile east of St. Elmo. Police said the bicycle and truck were westbound when the bike was allegedly struck from behind. Hearty was killed instantly and pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen.
A witness provided a description of the truck to police. State Police said Bagwill turned himself in around noon Monday.
Illinois State Police and Coroner Bowen continue to investigate the crash.
