The Greenville Plan Commission met Monday night to update its Unified Development Ordinance regarding the issuance of liquor licenses.
The commission has recommended to the city council that the ordinance be changed to allow conditional uses by bars, taverns and nightclubs in areas zoned commercial neighborhood, commercial general and commercial large scale. The motion was approved 4 to 1. Casting the “no” vote was Don Stover. The “yes” votes were from Jack Chism, Judy Cox, Scott Spencer and Chance Vohlken.
The council will consider the recommendation at its June 14 meeting.
The ordinance would still ban bars, taverns and nightclubs in the downtown area.
If approved by the council, the ordinance changes would allow liquor licenses to be granted to Willie’s Place and the Bond County VFW, both on South Fourth Street.
City Manager Dave Willey told WGEL Willie’s and the VFW have expressed interest in annexing into the city to hook onto the new sewer line, which will be installed along Fourth Street. Willey said one more easement is needed then the contractor can begin the sewer line project.
It should be underway in early summer.
