Robert L. Schilling, age 88 of Carlyle, died Saturday, May 7, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, Illinois. He was born May 19, 1927 in Centralia, a son of Albert M. and Bertha (Campbell) Schilling. He married Doloris “Dodie” Thompson on April 16, 1946 in Centralia and she preceded him in death on January 5, 2012.
Mr. Schilling is survived by 2 sons – Dan L. Schilling and wife Sharon of Edmond, Oklahoma and John B. Schilling of Bunker Hill; a daughter – Deb S. Lurkins and husband Dale of Carlyle; 8 grandchildren – Cory Schilling and wife Vicki, Casey Schilling and wife Lori, Stacy English and husband Mike, Erin Richardson and husband David, Tracy Schilling and wife Jill, Jennifer Schilling, Tim Schilling and wife Allison and Zach Schilling and wife Christy; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter – Barbara Amelung; four sisters – Veneita North, Thelma Dunbar, Marie Sollis, and Ruby Schilling; and two brothers – Ray Schilling and Jack Schilling.
Mr. Schilling was a World War II Veteran, having served in the Merchant Marines and the United States Army. He was a salesman for Fabick Caterpillar in Salem, Illinois and later worked and retired from Mack Trucks. After his retirement, Mr. Schilling worked as bailiff at the Clinton County Courthouse. Robert was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carlyle.
Funeral Services for Mr. Schilling will be Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle with Rev. Mark Goldman officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Carlyle Township Cemetery. The family will greet friends at Zieren Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the First Baptist Church in Carlyle or Centralia Humane Society House of Hope.
