Members of the Okaw Valley Amateur Radio Club, or OVARC, will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, Saturday and Sunday, June 25 & 26, in Patriot’s Park.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio.
During a disaster, public communications are often interrupted. Ham radio functions completely independently of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smart phones, and may be set up almost anywhere in minutes. Hams literally throw a wire in a tree for an antenna, connect it to a battery-powered transmitter and communicate halfway around the world.
Everyone is invited to Field Day. For more information about the event or Ham Radio, call John King at 664-0219.
