HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital – Breese has been awarded the “Partner Recognition” Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading health care community dedicated to transforming health care worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint, becomes a community anchor for sustainability and a leader in the global movement for environmental health and justice. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector.
The Partner Recognition Award is given to health care facilities that have begun to work on environmental improvements, have achieved some progress, and have at least a ten percent recycling rate for their total waste stream.
Highlights in the hospital’s sustainability program include recycling batteries, reducing the generation of pharmaceutical waste, and donation of supplies that can no longer be used internally to a charity – namely Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach. More information on that program can be found at www.mission-outreach.org.
“This award demonstrates our commitment to protecting the health of our patients, colleagues, community, and people in areas that cannot afford medical supplies,” said St. Joseph’s Hospital President and CEO Paulette Evans. “We look forward to working with Practice Greenhealth to continue navigating the path to sustainability for the future of health care.”
Along with the Breese hospital, three other hospitals in the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System also were honored with awards from Practice Greenhealth, including HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville and HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham (Partner for Change Award), and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
