A lightning strike is believed to be the cause of a fire in the steeple of the New Douglas Baptist Church Friday morning.
The call came in around 8:15 a.m. when smoke was noticed coming from the steeple. Personnel from the Olive, Alhambra, and Shoal Creek Fire Departments provided mutual aid. A ladder truck was called in from the Litchfield Fire Department. Greenville firefighters were on standby at their firehouse.
The Staunton Area Ambulance Service was also on the scene as a precaution, since most of the work being done by firefighters was on the roof of the church. No injuries were sustained. Fire crews were on the scene for several hours.
According to New Douglas Fire Chief Danny Robertson, the fire was contained to the steeple, which sustained heavy damage. The interior of the church just below the steeple sustained some water damage, but no fire damage.
