Carlyle Lake Rescue

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a child is recovering after nearly drowning in a swimming accident at Carlyle Lake Sunday, in a cove at Eldon Hazlet State Park.

An Illinois Conservation police officer arrived at the scene at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses said the boy, believed to be about 10 years of age, was wearing a personal flotation device, but swam back and forth across the cove several times.

At one time, the youth yelled for help. Two fishermen, participating in a fishing tournament, responded and brought the child to shore, where bystanders began first aid.

Initially, the boy’s breathing was shallow and he was unresponsive. Eventually his breathing became more regular and he was airlifted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
