Weather conditions are being blamed for fish dying in area ponds and lakes.
A large fish kill was discovered recently just below the dam at Silver Lake near Highland.
Fred Cronin, district fish biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, investigated the situation. He said the warmer the water is, the less oxygen it will hold. Smaller ponds, particularly those with a lot of algae blooms, are very susceptible to fish kills. The Highland situation, below the spillway, is a unique situation.

Cronin said small pond owners can use a good aeration system to provide some insurance against fish kills.

Cronin said the state is aware of other fish kill situations at Sangchris Lake, southeast of Springfield and Lake Taylorville.
