Granite City Soldier Dies In Non-Combat Incident

A Granite City man, serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan, has died in a non-combat related incident.

Staff Sergeant Christopher Wilbur was 36 years of age. The exact cause of his death was not given by the United States Department of Defense. His death was announced Sunday from the Pentagon.

Pentagon officials indicated Wilbur was in operations connected with keeping down terrorist activity in Afghanistan. Launched in 2015, the operation was known as Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Wilbur served 11 years in the military including two stints in Iraq. He was married with two young children.
