The multi-state search for missing 13 year old Katherine Derleth, and her infant son Christopher R. Derleth and the man alleged to be responsible for their disappearance, 39 Christopher M. Derleth ended Saturday near Charleston West Virginia. According to Madison County police the three were taken into custody without incident in a remote rural mountain range south of Charleston, at a permanent campground site.
Authorities report that Katherine and her infant son were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Katherine suffers from a heart condition.
The manhunt started Sunday the 18th after it was reported that Katherine and her then 2 week old son were missing. Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons filed charges on Monday the 19th against Christopher M. Derleth for alleged aggravated kidnapping and child abduction of two minors. The alleged kidnapping occurred in Edwardsville.
Bond County State’s Attorney Bauer told WGEL that Christopher M. Derleth is also currently the subject of more than one criminal investigation in Bond County. It’s alleged the defendant also violated an August court order that Derleth have no contact with the Katherine. Up until Saturday the 17th of September Christopher was living in Greenville.
Christopher is being held in West Virginia at news time waiting extradition. Madison County Sherriff Thomas Dixon thanked local and national media, and the public for their tips.
